Frederick L. Johnston, D.D.S.

Dr. Frederick L. Johnston was born in Mercedes, a small town in the southern part of the great state of Texas. He was the fourth child of eight kids. Mainly speaking Spanish and being raised alone by his beautiful mother, Dolores. Dr. Johnston and all his brothers and sisters worked in the hot and humid cotton fields of South Texas during the summers to help out the family.

After high school, Dr. Johnston attended Blinn Junior College in Brenham, Texas. He competed in track and field and was National Champion in the 120 yard hurdles. At Southwest Texas State University Dr. Johnston won the Star Conference award for the 110 meter hurdles. Following college, Dr. Johnston served in the United States Army for two years. During that time he received many awards in leadership and physical training. While in the army, he was accepted to Dental School at the University of Los Angeles.

While attending UCLA Dental School, Dr. Johnston continued to compete in track and field in AAU classification. He tried to compete in the decathlon but was unsuccessful due to the demands of dental school. After four years at UCLA, he was accepted to the University of California, San Francisco, in Orthodontics where he received his Certificate in Orthodontics. Dr. Johnston practiced for 20 years in Fremont, California where he was one of the four owners of Fremont Dental Group. On June 1, 2003, Olympic Orthodontics was started.

Dr. Johnston has two beautiful children, Rachel and Mark. He moved to Pleasanton in 1996. He has been an assistant track and field coach at Foothill High School, and is still actively competing in Masters track and field since 1980. Dr. Johnston has competed at a world class level in Turku, Finland; Osama, Japan; Durham, South Africa; Gateshead, England; Brisbane, Australia; Melbourne, Australia; Puerto Rico; Barquisimiento, Venezuela, San Sebastian and Spain.

Dr. Johnston’s Philosophy of Life: “We are placed on this earth to help each other. It is better to give than to receive and, if you give, do not expect anything in return. When you help people, it comes back to you many fold.”
